Destination: Firebox/Fall
Creek Valley Elevation: 11,200
feet Our 3 day backpack trip was wonderful! I was joined by 2 good friends who, like myself, have packed into this area a few times before. Our little pack tents added a brief, pleasant ambience to this scenic valley in the Uncompaghre Wilderness. The weather could not have been better, with daytime temperatures into the mid 50's, falling into the low 30's at night. The sky was partly cloudy and it was a little windy for the first 2 days, then brilliantly clear on the final day.
The bugling of bull elk was heard
very clearly during the second night which added to our enjoyment.
While we had been given a verbal warning about possible bear
presence, we did not encounter any. Patches of snow from last winter
remain on the northern slopes of the highest peaks. Both streams, the
Firebox and Fall, are flowing well. We all agreed to return to this beautiful place again, Lord willing. The 2 mile distance in and out was made with no incidence of injury, just some soreness which was a small price to pay for such an experience. |
